Bent Flyvbjerg, Oxford University’s most widely cited authority in his field, joins the industry at a pivotal moment, as we confront the urgent challenge of how to rapidly and responsibly deliver the minerals needed to electrify the planet.

Lima, December 10, 2025. The upcoming edition of the World Mining Congress 2026, to be held in Lima, Peru, from June 24 to 26, sets out the challenge of accelerating the unlocking of the minerals essential for global electrification. To rise to this moment, the Congress will bring together the most influential leaders and boldest thinkers, with one of its most anticipated speakers being Bent Flyvbjerg, coauthor of the book How Big Things Get Done, regarded as the world’s foremost scientific authority in megaproject management and recognized as the most cited academic in this field.

Flyvbjerg is an Emeritus Professor at the Saïd Business School of the University of Oxford and chair and cofounder of Oxford Global Projects, an institution dedicated to improving how megaprojects are planned and delivered worldwide. His experience beyond academia has enabled him to advise the governments of the United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Denmark, as well as Fortune 500 companies, multilateral banks, and organizations such as the European Commission and the United Nations.

The opportunity to hear Flyvbjerg is especially relevant for the global mining sector at a time when projects are becoming increasingly complex, costly, and urgent. His most recent book, How Big Things Get Done (2023), written together with Canadian author Dan Gardner, delves into why some major projects achieve extraordinary results while others fail spectacularly.

Managing Projects Well Is Crucial

Flyvbjerg notes that, with so many resources committed to large-scale projects, the responsibility to plan them properly has never been greater. “The potential benefits of building the right projects the right way are enormous—and matched only by the vast waste involved in taking on the wrong projects or executing them poorly,” he emphasizes.

In his article What You Should Know About Megaprojects, and Why, he cites estimates from the McKinsey Global Institute projecting annual infrastructure spending of US$3.4 trillion through 2030—about 4% of global GDP. When mining, oil and gas, defense, aerospace, and ICT are included, the value of megaprojects rises to between US$6 and 9 trillion per year, equivalent to roughly 8% of global GDP.

When these projects fail, the impact can be profound. As Flyvbjerg notes, “When projects of such magnitude fail, it’s not just the companies involved that suffer—entire national economies can feel the consequences.”

A Key Author for Mining Project Leaders

His book Megaprojects and Risk: An Anatomy of Ambition is essential reading for project managers, investors, and regulators. His research has been featured in Nature, Science, The New York Times, the Financial Times, The Economist, The Wall Street Journal, CNN, and the BBC, and translated into 21 languages.

During the World Mining Congress 2026, Flyvbjerg will lead a plenary session based on what he calls “the science of making large projects successful,” focusing on how to reduce delays, manage risks, shorten timelines, and design robust projects from the start.

The Congress will take place during the week of Inti Raymi, the ancestral Fiesta del Sol (Festival of the Sun), a celebration that symbolizes new light and the opportunity to begin again. This coincidence inspired the event’s official theme, Mining for the Future — Trust, Transformation, Technology, as a call to collectively rethink the course of mining.

Lima, November 17, 2025. Within a global context marked by the urgent need to secure critical minerals for the energy transition, the British Geological Survey (BGS) highlighted that the region possesses unique geological conditions capable of sustaining the increasing global demand for lithium, copper, rare earths, and other essential inputs for the energy transition.

The analysis was presented by Jonathan Ford, Director of National Geoscience at the BGS, and Karen Hanghøj, BGS Executive Director and member of the Organizing Committee of the World Mining Congress (WMC) 2026, in a recent column published in the Global Mining Review.

“From the active Pacific margin and the Andean range in the west to the cratonic terranes in the east, South America is rich in spectacular geological diversity,” said Ford and Hanghøj. This diversity is evident in the fact that it has some of the most important deposits on the planet and a production capacity that, according to the BGS, will be decisive for the global energy future.

A Geographically Strategic Region in A High-Tension Market

The BGS warns that, given the increase in demand for critical minerals—essential for clean technologies, electric mobility, and digital economies—it is necessary to carefully consider South American supply. The authors point out that the continent “is well positioned to significantly contribute to finding solutions to sustainable and secure supply of CRMs (Critical Raw Minerals)”.

The Lithium Triangle is one of the clearest examples. With half of the world’s resources, its geopolitical role is becoming increasingly evident. Ford and Hanghøj emphasize that these ‘salar’ deposits located in the Andes are “some of the most extreme environments on Earth,” highlighting both the challenge and the strategic value of their responsible exploitation.

The analysis also highlights that the region is the world’s largest supplier of niobium and dominates the production of copper, in addition to having large reserves of molybdenum, silver, tin, iron, and bauxite. Added to this is a geological dynamism that continues to deliver world-class discoveries, such as the Vicuña mining district, classified as “the largest greenfield copper discovery in the last 30 years.”

Geology, Governance, and Cooperation

According to the BGS, unlocking this potential depends on accessible, high-quality geological information. “Timely discovery, development, and responsible management of these resources is the foundation to incentivize and de-risk responsible investment in the mineral sector,” they stated.

In a market where supply chains are global, the British agency stresses that only international cooperation will enable common standards to be established: “long-term sustainable solutions require international collaboration that strengthens governance frameworks, accountability, transparency and regional value addition.”

WMC 2026: The Stage That Will Define the Future of Mining

Ms. Karen Hanghøj’s presence on the Organizing Committee of the World Mining Congress 2026, to be held in Lima, reinforces the link between these conclusions and the debates that will shape the global mining agenda. WMC 2026 will focus on how to responsibly produce more minerals to respond to the global urgency of the energy transition.

Ford and Hanghøj underlined that “partnerships between countries and with industry and civil society organizations are essential for developing and sharing good practices, as well as for building resilient and responsible mineral supply chains.” This is precisely one of the main themes of the Congress, which will bring together authorities, scientists, companies, and international organizations to advance toward more innovative, sustainable, and future-oriented mining.

Peru, already one of the world’s largest copper producer, supplying roughly 10% of global output, has both the resources and the momentum to help close this gap

By Doris Hiam-Galvez. PhD, Program Chair WMC 2026. South America plays a leading role in the global mining industry, with Peru standing out as a model for development. This andean country has long stood as one of the world’s leading mining nations, and today its role has become even more critical than ever. As the global economy races toward decarbonization, the demand for copper, lithium, and other critical minerals is accelerating at a pace that challenges supply chains and reshapes investment priorities. Few countries are as well-positioned as Peru to meet this demand.

Copper lies at the center of this story. Global forecasts indicate that annual refined copper demand, driven in large part due to the energy transition, could rise from around 28 million tonnes/year today to nearly 34 million tonnes by 2035, with potential for even higher demand depending on the pace of the transition. Yet, without significant new investment, the market may face a shortfall as early as 2027. Peru, already one of the world’s largest copper producer, supplying roughly 10% of global output, has both the resources and the momentum to help close this gap. Operations such as Quellaveco, alongside major expansions at Cerro Verde, show the scale and seriousness of this opportunity.

What makes Peru particularly important is not only its vast mineral endowment but also the sophistication of its operations.  Anglo American’s Quellaveco  was among the first in South America to deploy advanced digital twin models and autonomous haulage fleets.  Cerro Verde, operated by Freeport-McMoRan, has consistently invested in cutting-edge concentrator capacity. Las Bambas, a major driver of copper supply, is investing in expansion to boost throughput. Finally, Antamina, one of the world’s largest polymetallic mines, continues to demonstrate how innovation and operational excellence can endure across decades.

Peru is firmly part of the global conversation on mining, Technology and Transformation, even as it works to balance growth with broader social and environmental responsibilities while building the Trust that will sustain long term progress.

This is why Peru will host the World Mining Congress in 2026. The country embodies both the challenges and the opportunities of mining in the energy transition era: world-class deposits, a track record of technological progress, and a willingness to explore new models of development. The Congress will be a call to action. Heads of state, industry leaders, investors, scientists, and global institutions will come together to tackle a challenge:  the world may not face an absolute shortage of copper, but we do face a global productivity challenge.

The real question is how to bridge the gap between existing and new production.  Can we extract more minerals from the ores we already mine? Move material faster, process it smarter, cleaner and more efficiently? Can innovation help us leave both the environment and communities stronger than we found them? How can we achieve more with less and do it better?

Peru’s story is not simply about extraction; it is about mining for the future, building the foundations for global lasting prosperity at a moment when the world cannot afford to wait.
