The country will host the world’s leading mining congress, strengthening its leadership amid rising demand for critical minerals for global electrification.

Lima, January 26, 2026. Peru is set to consolidate its position as a key global mining player as it prepares to host the World Mining Congress 2026, one of the most important international gatherings in the sector. The designation confirms that the country is “playing in the big leagues of global mining,” stated Gustavo de Vinatea, CEO of the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (IIMP).
Held every two years, the World Mining Congress brings together top industry leaders, government authorities, academics, and executives from the world’s leading mining companies. The previous edition took place in Brisbane, Australia, while the next confirmed hosts are China and Canada, placing Peru firmly within the circuit of the world’s major mining nations.
According to De Vinatea, Peru’s selection as host reflects international recognition of its mining sector, both for the quality of its geological resources and the technical expertise of its professionals, as well as the country’s strategic role in the global energy transition.
“Peru is a highly respected country in the global mining community. It is no coincidence that we have been awarded the opportunity to host this congress, which is only held in countries with significant relevance in the industry,” he stated.
The World Mining Congress 2026 will bring together international experts in Lima to address one of the industry’s central challenges: how to accelerate mining project development to supply the minerals the world needs at the pace required. The event is expected to welcome regional authorities, fostering dialogue on Latin America’s role in meeting the growing demand for critical minerals.
According to the IIMP CEO, the event will position Peru at the heart of the global discussion on securing mineral supply for electrification, renewable energy, and technological development. “The world needs these minerals, and Peru has a fundamental role to play,” he noted.
Mining Competitiveness
Hosting the congress also represents an opportunity to strengthen the competitiveness of Peru’s mining industry. The IIMP aims for the event to promote knowledge exchange, technological innovation, and best practices—key elements in addressing the sector’s emerging challenges.
“The goal is for Peruvian mining to gain access to new markets, cutting-edge technologies, and solutions that enhance efficiency and global competitiveness,” De Vinatea added.
The World Mining Congress 2026 will take place in June and will coincide with a symbolic date for the country, Inti Raymi. Cultural activities surrounding the Congress will reflect this theme of renewal, symbolizing a new beginning for the mining industry at a time of global transformation. “We want this congress to represent a new chapter for global mining, with Peru playing a central role in shaping that new vision,” he concluded.
